Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained through steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. They capture the natural scent, flavor, and beneficial properties of the plant they’re derived from.

2. How do I use essential oils?

There are several ways to use essential oils:
Aromatically – diffuse or inhale directly
Topically – dilute with a carrier oil and apply to skin
Around the home – add to cleaning products, linen sprays, or bath soaks

Note: We do not recommend internal use unless guided by a qualified professional.

3. What’s the difference between single essential oils and blends?

Single essential oils are individual plant extracts (like Lavender or Peppermint), while blends combine several oils formulated to work synergistically for a specific purpose—such as calming, energizing, or refreshing.

4. Do I need to dilute essential oils?

Yes! Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diluted before applying to the skin. Use a carrier oil like Jojoba, Sweet Almond, or Fractionated Coconut. See our Dilution Guidelines for safe and effective use.

5. What is a carrier oil?

Carrier oils are plant-based oils used to safely dilute essential oils before topical application. They help "carry" the essential oil into the skin without causing irritation. Examples include Jojoba, Avocado, and Hemp Seed Oil.

6. Can I use essential oils on children or pets?

Some essential oils are safe for children when properly diluted, but others should be avoided. Always check age-appropriate usage and consult with a professional. For pets, use extreme caution—many oils are toxic to animals.

7. How should I store essential oils?

Store your oils in a cool, dark place, tightly sealed, and away from direct sunlight or heat. Amber or cobalt glass bottles help preserve potency and extend shelf life.

8. How long do essential oils last?

Most essential oils last 2–3 years, though some (like citrus oils) may oxidize sooner, and others (like Patchouli or Sandalwood) can improve with age. Keep bottles sealed and stored properly.

9. Can I apply blends directly to my skin?

Only pre-diluted roller blends are safe for direct skin application. If using concentrated blends from a bottle, always dilute with a carrier oil first. Check the label or product page for usage instructions.

10. Are your oils therapeutic grade?

While “therapeutic grade” isn’t a regulated term, all of our essential oils at Saffron Herb Co. are 100% pure, tested for quality, and sourced with integrity from trusted farms and distillers.
